Tweet Tweet
Okay, I think I finally get this.
And to be honest, give it a few weeks (and it’s only been a day so far) and I think this will really grow on me.
Now, I like facebook; I have 125 friends, various groups that I’m admin for, and even my own fan page, but I’m also liking this Twitter thing.
Not sure how long it’s been going, but it seems a lot of people are using it. They say it’s ‘micro-blogging’ and as a blogger myself, I can understand that and think it’s great!
Basically, you blog, in micro-chunks of 140 characters; technically called a ‘tweet’. You ‘follow’ other twitters, which is akin to subscribing to an RSS feed on a blog, and can ‘reply’ (make comments) to their ‘tweets’ (posts). You can do this direct on your own twitter homepage on the web, or from an app on your computer desktop, or from your mobile phone either via the many phone apps, or even via text message – though not sure of the cost implications of text – so check before you go for the SMS option.
So, for me anyway, it’s a cross between my facebook, and my blog and I like it. Obviously, there’s a lot more to it, like getting everybody’s tweets (status updates) sent as text messages to your phone, straight away, so you will always know exactly what your friends are up to – or what they choose to tell everybody they’re up to!
Now, I have to be honest here, no one is actually ‘following’ me at the moment. Well not yet. And I’m only following two people; Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross, cause I don’t know if any of the people I know are twitters (yet). Are you? But I can see this really catch on. And if it’s good enough for Stephen Fry, then it’s good enough for me!
So what’s Stephen up to? Well as I write (Sat am), he’s just finished reading the last three chapters of Thunderball (Crime and Punishment next!) and has now gone for a walk in the West End.
And me? Well I’m blogging aren’t I!
So if you’re a Twitter, please let me know! Follow me and I’ll follow you! And if you’re not, then go have a look. I can see this getting really big! And it won’t be long before somebody else nabs your easy much-preferred username and you’ll be stuck with some hideous over-long email type thing. Go on, try it!

Update – Just added the Twitter app to facebook, which is great cause whatever I ‘tweet’ now will also become my facebook status! Yay! Can you see I’m getting excited!
So come on the rest of you! Get tweeting!
- PS: With apologies to my blog readers using an RSS feed who will now have got this post twice; blame facebook!
